What is the difference between guttered and gutterless vehicles?
Guttered vehicles have a rain gutter along each side of the vehicle where the
roof panel joins the side panel of the vehicle. Gutters are most commonly found on older vehicles.
Gutterless vehicles do not have a conventional rain gutter, but usually have
a plastic or rubber strip or rain channel running along each side of the roof.
More commonly on newer vehicles, the roof bars will attach to the vehicle using a
clamp around the door apature or using “fixed point” fixing holes provided by the car manufacturer, either on the
roof panel or inside the door aperture. Note:Some modern vehicles use guttered style roof bars to fit
where the vehicle has a pronunced trim around the door aperture or where the vehicle has pockets in the roof line.
Can I convert between the three types of bars?
It is not possible to convert between the three types of bars. Each bar style
has been designed to offer the maximum performance and value under the
conditions of each fitment style. To achieve this the bar thickness of each roof
bar style is different, and is not interchangeable.
Why are there so many different kits?
Each kit has been designed to suit different vehicle styles, most kits will
fit numerous vehicles of the same style. However, some kits are designed to fit
specific vehicles where the vehicle has a unique door aperture profile, or
specialist fixing requirements.
I want a roof rack, not roof bars?
A roof rack can be created by adding one of our range of roof decks to your roof bars. The 102U is
our standard deck which creates a platform area of 100cm x 90cm. The Excrusion 16 and Safari 17
aluminium decks offer greater style and larger carry areas.
Can I buy locks for my bars?
Locks are available to use on Paddy Hopkirk 400 system and Mont Blanc 3000
system roof bars. The Mont Blanc 400N system uses anti tamper security fixings
and does not require accessory locks.
My bars are Paddy Hopkirk not Mont Blanc, can I still use the Mont Blanc
fitting kits?
Owners of Paddy Hopkirk 400 system roof bars, are able to use Mont Blanc
series fitting kits from K01 to K31 only. Important: Owners of older LM400
system roof bars are unable to use the Mont Blanc fitting kits.
My bars have red end caps, can I still use the Mont Blanc kits?
Sadly not, roof bars with red end caps are from our now discontinued LM400
range. The only kits available for this range were Paddy Hopkirk branded and had
an FK prefix. Important: It is not possible to convert these bars using the new
Mont Blanc 3000 system kits which also have an FK prefix.
I have a three door vehicle, how do the rear clamps fit?
In some cases the rear clamps fit around the rear window aperture. For
vehicles where this is not possible a rear bar may be fitted using a 400NX
extension kit.
What is the 400NX, and do I need it?
The 400NX is an extension system which allows the rear bar to be spaced
correctly on the vehicle roof, offering greater load stability, and allowing the
opportunity to fit accessories such as roof boxes, racks, and cycle carriers.
Can I get spares for my roof bars?
